Your Generosity Changes Lives
SMART Recovery NYC relies on the generosity of volunteers to facilitate meetings, help with technical support and logistics, and for outreach. Below are some of the current volunteer opportunities we have available:
Facilitator: Facilitators are the backbone of SMART. They found and run meetings and help guide discussion. Training consists of 1 month of distance training coordinated by SMART’s Central Office alongside a shadowing process where you will co-run meetings with trained facilitators. During this process, you will learn and master evidence-based cognitive and behavioral techniques alongside transferable skills in managing group dynamics. Potential facilitators with addictive behaviors are asked to be abstinent for 6 months. So if you would like to start a new meeting near you or for a certain affinity group or help facilitate current meetings, please get in touch with us!
Discussion leader: If you are a SMART Recovery participant who shows up to meetings regularly, and would like to back up a facilitator using a discussion script, and show up a little early to welcome new people to SMART before the facilitator arrives, feel free to volunteer for this role.
Social coordinator: Are you a people person? Would you like to help organize and lead occasional social outings for SMART NYC participants? If you like having fun and meeting new people, this would be a good role for you.
Social media contributor: Help manage and add content to our Facebook and Twitter feeds. If you spend some of your time browsing blogs and articles related to psychology and addictive behaviors, this role would be a great fit for you!
App developer: SMART recently released its first open-source app for the iPhone. If you would like to help develop further apps, or help to port the current one to Android, please contact SMART’s National office and let them know.
